How to create a fillable PDF form (free, no Acrobat)

Printed, filled by hand, scanned, sent back: paper forms waste everyone’s time. A fillable PDF can be completed on any computer or phone.

Start from your existing document

You don’t need to redesign anything. Write your form in Word, Google Docs or Canva as usual, export it as PDF, then add the fields on top of it. Leave enough blank space where answers should go.

Add the fields in four steps

  1. Open Create PDF form and select your PDF.
  2. Choose Text field, then click and drag where a short answer goes (name, date, email).
  3. Choose Text area for long answers (comments, description) and Checkbox for yes/no choices.
  4. Click Create the form and download your interactive PDF.

Tips for a form people actually fill in

  • Size fields generously: a field that is too small makes the text tiny.
  • One field per answer: separate first name and last name if you need them apart.
  • Keep labels on the page: write “Name:” in your document and put the field next to it.
  • Test it: open the result in your browser or in Fill PDF form before sending it.

Where does the form work?

Helpdf creates standard PDF form fields (AcroForm). They work in Adobe Acrobat Reader, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Apple Preview and most PDF apps on mobile.

Receiving the answers

People fill in the PDF, save it and email it back to you. If the answers must not change afterwards, ask them to use the Flatten option of Fill PDF form, or add a password with Protect PDF.
